Every day, we have a different learning centre focus such as Writing Mondays, Math Tuesdays and Story Wednesdays. Last year, Fridays were all about fun and games. This year, we decided to kick it up a notch. Introducing: Engineering Fridays! Every Friday, we explore a different building activity focused on using different materials and, boy, do we have fun doing them!
Our building projects have included different materials such as popsicle sticks, straws and cups. We have created bridges and houses as well as roller coasters, too! Fridays have definitely become a favourite day among our little bees. And the best part is, these activities are STEM friendly (science, technology, engineering, and math).
Thinking of continuing the fun at home? We highly recommend it! Creating different structures just takes simple household supplies and a bit of creativity. The fun part is putting everything together. Here are some great ideas you can try at home!
DIY #1: Toilet Paper Roll City
Collect toilet paper rolls and create your own little city. Cut slits into the sides of the rolls to attach them together. Use paint to bring the city to life with windows and colours.
DIY #2: Straw Structures
Using coloured straws and string, help your tot put together different geometrical shapes and make fun ornaments to hang! You can get really creative with this fun activity with different shapes. Can you make a soccer ball inspired shape?
DIY #3: Stacking Cups
Using a set of the same cups (either reusable or paper), spend an afternoon creating different structures by stacking them. Your toddler will have a great time keeping their structure up and using their gross motor skills all at the same time. Win-win!
We hope you enjoy these fun STEM activities at home!
